The Ellwood Shotokan Karate Club (ESKC) was established in 1995.
The club trains in traditional Japanese karate as developed by the late Master Gichin Funakoshi (1867-1957). This martial art originated in Okinawa as a centuries-old, unarmed fighting method. Master Funakoshi is responsible for bringing the art out of secrecy and making it acceptable for public practice by establishing the Japan Karate Association (JKA) www.jka.or.jp, an international organization dedicated to studying traditional karate-do. JKA affiliate clubs are found in over 80 countries and throughout the U.S. It maintains standardized training and testing criteria world-wide.
Sensei Teriyuki Okazaki, an original student of Master Funakoshi, established the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) www.iskf.com, in the 1960's as an organization of the JKA for the United States, Canada and South America (although the ISKF split from JKA during the summer of 2007); similar JKA organizations can be found throughout the world. ISKF is headquartered in Philadelphia. The organization provides expert instructors, certified examiners, tournaments, seasonal training camps, and instructor training. |
